Music in Vienna

Vienna is one of few cities that has such a great musical heritage. Do you know after all there is a inextricably linkage among this city, waltzes of Strauss, the Vienna Boy’s Choir, and the music of Mozart? Marriage of Figaro is written here by Mozart who was married in Stephansdom, Vienna’s cathedral.

Travelers to Vienna have plenty of opportunities to hear live music, no matter what their tastes and preferences. Whether you’re listening to a band playing folk music in a centuries-old wine garden or enjoying The Marriage of Figaro in one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, you can find virtually any kind of music here.

Pick up a copy of Wien Monatsprogramm at the tourist office. It lists all the concerts and performances in town. These days, it’s easy to buy tickets to most events in advance. So before you leave home, see who’s playing. If you’d be crushed to miss them, purchase your tickets ahead of time. Sometimes, standing-room only tickets are also available on the day of performance.

Enjoying classical music in Vienna.

You can hear Strauss and Mozart performed most nights in summer in venues ranging from a modest church to Schonbrunn Palace. If you plan to attend one of these performances or to go to the Opera, take your Sunday best clothes. The venues are often beautiful and if you didn’t plan to tour one of the palaces, you can at least see one of the most spectacular halls by attending a concert there.

The Vienna Mozart Orchestra performs in the State Opera, the Konzerthaus, the Golden Hall, and Hofburg Palace. The Vienna Waltzer Orchestra performs in the Palffy Palace. For something really special, attend a concert in Mozart House, where the composer himself worked and played.

Packages are available that include dinner and a concert.

The Vienna State Opera performs operas by Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner and others from mid-September through mid-June. The Opera House, built between 1861 and 1869, is one of the most opulent on earth. The Vienna Philharmonic performs in the world-renowned Musikverien concert hall from October through June.

The Vienna Boys Choir performs at the Sunday morning mass in the Hofmusikkapelle of the Hofburg Palace. After the mass, they usually perform a couple of numbers in front of the crowd. You should buy tickets online at least two months in advance.

Other kinds of music.

For a raucous, road-house experience, try the Augustinerkeller where the band plays Octoberfest-style favorites. The spit-roasted chicken and pork and huge selection of wines by the glass are other good reasons to visit. At night, Vienna can be on the formal side, but you won’t feel out of place in your jeans here.

During the summer, there are jazz concerts at the City Hall on Sundays at noon. Brunch is served, and a variety of jazz styles are featured.

Vienna also has a well-regarded jazz festival each summer where headliners like Herbie Hancock, Bobbie McFerrin, Melody Gardot, and Jamie Cullum appear in venues like the opera house and the concert hall.
